A Private Anuradhapura Day Tour Through Sri Lanka's First Ancient Capital

Full day · ~12 hrsNegombo · Colombo · Airport (CMB)Private group

Our Anuradhapura day tour is the simplest way to explore Sri Lanka's first ancient capital and holiest city in a single, unhurried day. It suits history lovers, culturally curious travellers and anyone based around Negombo, Colombo, Sigiriya or the airport who wants the highlights of the Sacred City without juggling tuk-tuks, ticket queues and the fierce dry-zone sun on their own. Families, couples and solo travellers all ride privately, at their own pace, with an English-speaking driver who knows this sprawling site well.

Anuradhapura isn't a single monument but an entire ancient kingdom spread across kilometres of forest, reservoirs and ruins, founded more than 2,300 years ago. This is where you'll find the Sri Maha Bodhi — grown from a sapling of the very tree under which the Buddha gained enlightenment — alongside colossal brick stupas that once rivalled the pyramids of Giza in scale. Add serene meditating Buddhas, royal bathing ponds and rock temples, and you have one of Asia's great archaeological landscapes. Because the sites lie far apart, your own vehicle and driver turn a hot, confusing slog into a relaxed, well-paced day.

You'll be collected early from your hotel and driven north into the dry-zone heartland, arriving before the heat peaks. Across the day you'll circle the Sacred City's great stupas, pause at the Bodhi Tree, wander Abhayagiri's monastery ruins and cool off beside the Twin Ponds, with your driver timing stops to dodge the crowds. Everything is private and flexible — start at dawn, add the Mihintale climb, or slow right down for photography. Book ahead by WhatsApp, phone or our online form and we'll confirm your driver before the day begins.

What you'll see on this tour.

A balanced mix of history, culture and a taste of local life — all in one comfortable day.

Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi sacred fig tree on its gold-railed terrace, Anuradhapura
Stop 1

Sri Maha Bodhi

The spiritual heart of Anuradhapura, the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi is one of the most sacred sites in the Buddhist world and the oldest historically authenticated tree on earth, planted in 288 BC. It grew from a cutting of the original Bodhi tree in India under which the Buddha gained enlightenment, carried here by the princess-nun Sangamitta. Today it stands on a raised, gold-railed terrace, draped in prayer flags and tended without a single break for over two thousand years. Pilgrims in white come to make offerings in the cool of morning and evening — a quiet, deeply moving place to begin your visit.

Whitewashed Ruwanwelisaya stupa ringed by stone elephants, Anuradhapura
Stop 2

Ruwanwelisaya Stupa

Gleaming brilliant white against the dry-zone sky, the Ruwanwelisaya is the best-loved of Anuradhapura's great stupas and one of the tallest ancient monuments anywhere. Built by King Dutugemunu in the 2nd century BC, its vast hemispherical dome rises from a platform ringed by a wall of stone elephants, each carved a little differently. Whitewashed and still actively worshipped, it glows almost luminous at dawn and dusk. Walk the circuit clockwise alongside white-clad pilgrims, look up at the towering spire, and you start to grasp the sheer ambition of the ancient Sinhalese kings.

Giant red-brick Jetavanaramaya stupa and monastery ruins, Anuradhapura
Stop 3

Abhayagiri & Jetavanaramaya

Beyond the white shrines lie the brooding brick giants of Anuradhapura's ruined monasteries. The Jetavanaramaya was once among the tallest structures in the ancient world — a colossal red-brick dome that supported thousands of monks at its peak. Nearby, the Abhayagiri complex spreads through shaded forest, its toppled pillars, bathing pools, guardstones and famous moonstone carving hinting at a vast living city of learning. Cooler and quieter than the main shrines, this is where the scale of the lost kingdom really sinks in — and where the best photographs and most peaceful wandering are usually found.

Isurumuniya rock temple beside a lotus pond, Anuradhapura
Stop 4

Isurumuniya Rock Temple

Carved into and around a granite outcrop beside a lotus-covered pond, Isurumuniya is one of Anuradhapura's most atmospheric temples. It's best known for its delicate stone carvings — the celebrated Isurumuniya Lovers, the bathing elephants chiselled into the living rock, and a small museum of royal sculpture. Climb the steps cut into the boulder for a lovely view over the tank and treetops. Compact, shaded and rich in detail, it makes a gentle, rewarding stop and a welcome contrast to the open expanse of the great stupas elsewhere in the Sacred City.

Serene 4th-century Samadhi Buddha statue in meditation, Anuradhapura
Stop 5

Twin Ponds & Samadhi Buddha

Two of Anuradhapura's quieter marvels round out the day. The Kuttam Pokuna, or Twin Ponds, are a pair of beautifully proportioned stone bathing pools built for monks, fed through carved makara spouts and an early filtration system that still impresses engineers today. A short walk away sits the Samadhi Buddha, a 4th-century seated statue caught in deep, serene meditation — long held to be one of the finest expressions of calm in Asian sculpture. Together they show the gentler, more human side of the ancient city, away from the towering domes, and make a peaceful place to finish your tour.

Anuradhapura tour FAQ

Questions before you book.

How long is the Anuradhapura day tour?

It's a full day, roughly 12 hours door to door. We usually pick up around 6:00 AM from the west coast and have you back in the early evening. The Sacred City is large, so an early start makes all the difference.

What should I wear for the temples?

Light, modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees, and shoes that are easy to slip off — you'll go barefoot and hatless at the most sacred spots. A hat, sunscreen and water help between sites; we keep water in the vehicle.

Are the entrance tickets included?

The Sacred City archaeological ticket is paid directly at the site, so you only ever pay the official rate. Everything else — vehicle, driver, fuel and tolls — is included in your fixed quote.

Can we combine Anuradhapura with Mihintale or Sigiriya?

Yes. Mihintale's climb pairs naturally with this tour, and many guests link Anuradhapura with Sigiriya over two days. Tell us and we'll shape the day around it.

Where can you pick me up from?

Negombo, Colombo, Bandaranaike Airport (CMB) and nearby hotels are all routine starting points. Share your pickup and we'll confirm a fixed all-in fare.

Notes from the back seat

What guests write home about.

Very good service. Rashi picked us up on time and was very professional. He showed us the important places on the way while driving us to the hotel. I can recommend this taxi service. Reasonable prices compared to airport taxis.

My journey has been fantastic, even though my flight was postponed by seven hours. They showed great empathy towards my circumstances. The driver was right on time at our designated meeting spot. Throughout the entire process, the instructions and communication with him were always precise, as was our conversation before and during the ride. I definitely recommend this experience.

Ashoka Ranjani

Chanaka was waiting for me in Colombo Airport and was super easy to find him with his car. And also the comunication before meet him. I had a delay with my flight of 7 hours and he was super polite and very understanding with my situation. Definetly, the best experience you can find.

To begin with, I want to mention that Colombo Taxi Airport offers an outstanding taxi service. We hired a taxi from Weligama to Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport, and everything was arranged perfectly. The car was of high quality, spotless, and extremely comfortable, and the driver showed up on time.

They decorated the white Mercedes exactly as I'd described to my fiancée's mother — orchids, white ribbon, photos of us on the dashboard. The driver wore a tie. Our photographer thanked them afterwards.
