What makes Wilpattu special is its scale and its lakes. The park's name means land of lakes, after the dozens of villus — natural, sand-rimmed rainwater basins — scattered through the forest, where animals gather to drink and the scenery turns wonderfully photogenic. Across this huge, tangled wilderness roam leopards, sloth bears, elephants, spotted deer, sambar, crocodiles and a rich birdlife, and because visitor numbers are far lower than Yala, sightings often feel pleasantly exclusive.
